A father (Frank) and his son (Rob) were flying a private airplane when suddenly they developed total engine failure. In attempting to bring the plane down safely, Frank tells Rob that he loves him. The plane crashes, Frank dies, and Rob is brought to the Trauma Center. As Rob tells me this story he is constantly writhing in pain, his ankle broken and every bone in his body having been jolted. Several hours later, at the conclusion of visiting hours, the family is asked to leave, and I tell them that I will do some healing touch/relaxation techniques with Rob. The family is open to this complementary approach, and Rob is willing as well.

We begin the session with a prayer -- thanking God for the preservation of life -- and also asking that God's unconditional love welcome Frank into eternal peace. We pray for the family, that those who are grieving may be comforted. We pray for Rob, that his injuries may heal. As this is going on Rob is continually moving around, just trying to find a comfortable position to be in. All day he has complained of pain in his left shoulder.

As I continue with the session, I placed my right hand on Rob's left shoulder, and my left hand intuitively goes to his heart. The restlessness and moaning stopped! Rob immediately became calm and restful. Reiki was healing the injury to his shoulder (and body) -- as well as the injury to his heart in the death of his father just a few hours earlier.
Steve is immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. A virus has invaded his circulatory system, and "stuff" is growing around one of his heart valves. We feared he may not make the night. When I arrive at the hospital, I spend about an hour with his wife Ellen. When she is composed we enter Steve's room to conduct the ritual prayers of anointing of the sick for our church.

Normally I would begin the prayers, and as I say the beginning prayers I would open the container of blessed oil. As I approach the prayer of anointing I would dip my thumb in the oil, and then place my hand on the person's head. At the actual words of anointing I would lower my thumb to their forehead. For some reason, I did it differently this night. Before I began the prayers I had already oiled up my thumb. I began the prayers with my hand on Steve's head and IMMEDIATELY felt energy flowing -- and it was flowing big time!

Just as I came to the words of anointing I lowered my thumb to Steve's forehead -- and instantaneously he fell asleep and began snoring heavily. Ellen was shocked thinking that he was being so "rude" as to fall asleep in the middle of prayers. I assured her that my sermons had a similar effect on people, and not to worry!

Outside Steve's room I alluded to Reiki, and Ellen was somewhat familiar with it. I then explained to her what had happened. Again, there was no doubt, the healing power of Reiki was at work. Three weeks later Steve walked out of the hospital!

Mikao Usui was born in 1864 in Japan. There are perhaps three different stories to his upbringing. As I can best determine, he was a Buddhist monk. In searching ancient writings (Sanskrit, Sutras, Bible, etc.) he was enthralled with the stories of the healing of this person called Jesus/Buddha. He searched for the answer to the question, "How did Jesus/Buddha heal?"

His quest took him to the monks of Tibet who for centuries practiced this "hands-on" healing touch. In the early morning hours of the last day of a 21-day (fasting) retreat he encountered a light moving toward him. The light struck him and left him unconscious. When he awoke it was midday. He remembered the entire encounter and was filled with the Reiki energy.

Usui spent a number of years practicing and teaching Reiki in the poorest areas of Kyoto. He taught the following five principles as a daily part of his Reiki practice:

Just for today
Do not worry.

Just for today
Do not anger.

Honor your parents, teachers, and elders.

Earn your living honestly.

Show gratitude to every living thing.

Mikao Usui died in March 1926. He had worked closely with Dr. Chujiro Hayashi who followed in his footsteps. A Mrs. Hawayo Takata was born in Hawaii in 1900, and worked in the sugar cane fields. She married an accountant at one of the plantations. After giving birth to two children, her husband died in 1930. Five years later she became ill and travelled to Japan for help. She refused regular medical advice (surgery), and spent a year receiving Reiki. All of her ailments disappeared! She eventually was trained, and became a Reiki Master, in Hawaii, by Dr. Hayashi. She atttuned many others in the practice of Reiki. Thus Reiki came to the Western World.

Reiki is a very personal experience. It is very soothing and comforting as well. When you experience a reiki session you enter a very "safe" place to be. After all, you have asked to be encompassed in unconditional Love from on high. Nothing can harm you. In this kind of setting (mind set) you may find it safe to remember issues that you have been holding on to for a LONG time -- I call it the "emotional garbage" of our past lives. One session I had at the hospital was with an elderly gentleman. He was on the cardiac floor because no one could figure out why his heart was acting to irregularly. There were two of us (myself and Gloria) who were going to do Reiki. We no sooner started then the patient's left hand jumped bolt-upright, and then ever so slowly relaxed. Gloria had her hand over his heart and he ever so gently reached up and placed his hand on hers. Tears then began flowing from his eyes. It was a beautiful sight. Without saying a word to him, he was able to find that safe place to allow himself the privilege of releasing tensions held within himself. He had not been able to do that on his own. Reiki helped him.
